As many of you know, I’m a voracious reader. Although many books have had an impact on my life, one book has been so impactful that we’ve made the lessons from it the theme of this year’s Success Tour: “Acres of Diamonds” by Russell Conwell. If you’ve listened to Episode 74 of It’s a Good Life, you may have heard me share a bit of Mr. Conwell’s story, from his journey to building the largest Protestant church in the United States to becoming the founder of Temple University. You may have also heard me share a few excerpts from “Acres of Diamonds,” a story that began as a lecture before it was published, and share the lessons I’ve taken from it and applied to my life and business.

If you’re not familiar with “Acres of Diamonds,” Russell Conwell shares the stories of several men who went in search of a fortune only to find the fortune they sought was right beneath their feet. They didn’t have to travel far to find it; only open their eyes and mine what was already under their toes. The timeless principles outlined in the work are just as true today as when Mr. Conwell first presented them.

Many of us have dreams and a vision for our lives; however, these dreams often get derailed. One of the biggest culprits? We don’t know that everything we need is right beneath our feet. In the case of the stories in “Acres of Diamonds,” the fortune was literally underneath their feet. For many of us, the key to our fortunes lies in understanding that everything we’ve done until now can help us get where we need to go. We’ve already developed the skills, knowledge, and tools we need to get ahead; we just need to use them.

In “Acres of Diamonds,” Conwell states, ““We must know what the world needs first, then invest ourselves to supply that need, and success is almost certain” Often, we put off our dreams and goals because we think we need more knowledge, skills or opportunities first. While this may be true to some degree, we already have all we need to start on our journeys. As Conwell says, ““It is not so much where you are as what you are.”

In 2018, find your acres of diamonds; they’re underneath your feet right now. What is a need in the marketplace that only you can fill? Answer this question and begin to apply your knowledge and skills to deliver it to your best clients right now. The American Dream is alive and well. When you start where you are with what you have, you’ll be well on your way to making your dream a reality.
