According to the age-old rules of the Law of the Harvest, the rewards we receive in life are always in proportion to the service we provide. I recently shared the third in a series of unheard recordings by personal growth legend Earl Nightingale in which he explained why what you put out into the world is what you get back in return. Here are some of the major takeaways:

Increasing your service increases your rewards

In life, you reap what you sow – your rewards match your service. If you increase the level of service you provide to people, your rewards will increase too! If you truly want to succeed and reach your full potential, ask yourself this question every morning: How can I increase my service today knowing that my rewards in life must be in exact proportion to my service? Do this every day for 30 full days and you will have formed one of the most valuable habits in the world.

Rewards come in two forms

Rewards come in both tangible and psychic forms. They include the money we earn, the home we buy, the car we drive and the clothes we wear. They can also include the way we feel, our enjoyment, our peace of mind and our inner satisfaction. Whatever it is that you seek in reward, you must first earn in the form of service to others. All attempts to sidestep this law of cause and effect will end in failure, frustration and even ultimate demoralization. However, once you understand this law fully – both intellectually and emotionally – you will chart a really successful course through life.

Become great where you are

A person’s world can be compared to a plot of ground. All earth has the same amazing potential – it’s what you do with it that counts. If you just sit and watch your plot, there will be no growth. If you toss a few seeds on the ground, the rain and the soil’s natural fertility will probably reward you with some results. If you want a beautiful flower garden, however, you must cultivate the land with care and purpose. Your life is exactly like this plot of ground – you must decide what you want it to be and then you have to get to work to nurture it and become great where you are.

If you focus on increasing your service, your income and your future will take care of themselves. To learn more, listen to the latest episode of “It’s a Good Life.”
