A goal is defined as the end to which all effort is directed. Many of us set goals in the beginning the year, only to fall off track or forget about them altogether by summer. We make excuses for not reaching our goals—it’s always something else that is preventing us from getting to where we want to go.

People miss their goals for many reasons. It may be their goals lack clarity. After all, you can’t reach something you can’t see. Maybe they’re inconsistent in their activities. Many of us set goals to double or triple our sales numbers only to stop being consistent with our lead generation a few months in. We go from making ten calls a day to maybe two or three. And then we try to make it up at the end of the year. If you want to reach your goals, you have to be consistent. The final most common reason people miss their goals is they give up with their faced with a challenge. Maybe they’re facing a personal setback or illness. They may say, “I can’t reach my goals now; it’s just too hard.” Marilyn Vos Savant said, “Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.”

The most successful people not only set goals, they reach them no matter what. If you want to get back on track to reach yours, follow these tips:

  1. Define your goals, and be as specific as possible. The more specific your goals, the more clearly you’ll be able to see them. Write down specific numbers and percentages and any other details you can think of.
  1. Create action steps. The more you break down your goal into smaller action steps, the easier it will be to achieve it. These little steps may not seem like much, but every time you complete an action, you’re that much closer to achieving your goal.
  1. Track your progress. How else will you know how close you are to achieving your goal? When you track your numbers and activities you get a better picture of your progress toward success. Remember, there’s no such thing as failure, only feedback. Tracking gives you unbiased feedback on your path toward achieving your goals.
