I am writing this after the Success Tour in Seattle, which for all of us lucky enough to be there, proved to be a very timely and powerful event! There is no doubt that during and for a little while after we attend any Buffini & Company event, we feel energized, we feel lifted up, we feel like we can take on the world, and the market and whatever other challenges come our way! And then, life happens. We find ourselves drifting and no longer are we feeling fired up and excited about the possibilities…we just feel flat and tired. One of the major keys to being a great leader is to figure out how we can keep ourselves inspired and growing personally throughout our lives so we can continue to motivate and help others to sell more homes, reach their goals and ultimately, have a better quality of life. So, what can we do to keep our fire burning consistently?

It is all about choice

We have all heard the adage “We cannot control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond to what happens to us.” A very true statement. With the overwhelming job description that we take on as leaders many of us feel that we take care of everybody and everything. We often wonder “When is someone going to take care of me?” Now, I hope everyone reading this has a wonderful support system of family, friends and associates; however it is not up to them to keep us on top of our game. It is up to us and it is all about the choices we make each day. The activities we are consistent with daily determine the life that we have. It is no surprise to anyone if we eat right and workout daily, our health, energy and physique will tell that story. If we choose 45 minutes of lead generation regularly instead of letting our day run over us, we will build deeper relationships in the industry and we will have more opportunities to work with and serve people. People that lead inspired lives break it down to the truly important activities that they know are necessary to achieve their goals and that of their business as well. They focus the majority of their time and energy in the areas that make the most difference and they delegate or drop the rest.

Living inspired

You may be thinking “Easier said than done J’aime…have you seen my life, and my never ending to-do list?!” I hear you…and this is not easy. Living and feeling inspired most of the time requires daily positive effort and a willingness to grow. Society naturally tries to pull us and our attitude down to match the status quo which is predominantly mediocre and negative. Without being too dramatic (and I can’t help it) we are at war. Why is this lifestyle that is so countercultural worth the effort? The main benefit is the opportunity to be a better leader and manager, a more encouraging mother or father, a more supportive husband or wife, a more compassionate volunteer, a more productive and profitable business person. Who doesn’t want that? When we give to ourselves, when we work on creating and designing a better life we become more realized and fulfilled in every role we play. We become a magnet for other successful people, who give us great energy and ideas while helping to keep us on track with a positive mindset, getting after our goals and dreams. Living inspired is a vivid feeling of being awake and truly alive, full of self confidence, ready for the challenges and the opportunities that are all around us!

Practical steps

How do we get inspired and stay inspired so that we can lead and empower other people to do the same?

  • What fills you up? What gives you great energy and joy? Make a list of these activities, people or places for you. Then, plug some time for these important things into your schedule each day, each week. This process of renewal keeps you going, feeling strong and energized.
  • Determine your priorities—if everything is a priority, nothing is. Protect these important activities with boundaries. This will ensure that when you are working or at play you are investing your time effectively.
  • Be the creator of your own inspiring environment—in your office and in your home. Clean up the clutter! Hang motivational pictures and your visual and written goals. Bring in fresh flowers to inspire creativity and freshness. Play instrumental music that moves you.
  • Take time to be silent. Journal your thoughts and reflect on your day. This is one of the best ways to gain perspective on your own growth or what is really going on inside you.
  • Exercise, eat well, and get a good night sleep!
  • Be present and focused wherever you are…be there. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness, the things that fill up your soul.

This is our mission as leaders. We set the tone in our offices and in our homes with the attitude and energy we bring to each day, each circumstance, each victory or obstacle that we encounter. People are looking to us for guidance, direction and yes, inspiration. By choosing to do the most important activities each day to make our business and our life better, we encourage and motivate others to do the same. It is only when we are at our best personally that we are truly able to share our skills and talents with the people we love and the people we lead. You may have heard this message before. I encourage you to act now while your intention is hot! Choose 1 thing that inspires you and fills you up, add it to your day as a non-negotiable activity and then feel your energy and mood shift into high gear! As always, I wish you all the best in your pursuit of the good life!
