A few months ago, I dedicated two episodes of my podcast to a book that’s had a profound impact on my life: Mastery: The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment a best-selling book by George Leonard. We live in the age of mass distraction, where we’re focused on quick fixes, not necessarily putting in the time, practice and energy into mastering something. We want the five minute ab workout that promises a new body in three installments of $19.95 instead of making the necessary lifestyle and food choices to get them.

Leonard defined mastery as “the mysterious process during which that which is at first difficult becomes progressively easier and more pleasurable through practice.” In the book, he encourages readers to press ‘pause,’ and I can tell you, the best breakthroughs in my life have happened when I hit the pause button. When you work toward mastery, you’re bringing your gifts to the outside.

5 Keys to Mastery

1. Instruction: When you don’t have instruction, things take longer to learn. Seek out a mentor or coach who can offer advice and guidance on your journey to mastery.

2. Practice: Practice isn’t something you do, it’s something you are. Leonard says, “Practice is the magic formula. Talent is important, but not nearly as important as practice.” The secret is to make sure it’s not boring. When there’s no visible progress, it can be tough to stick to the path. Mix it up to help you stay on track.

3. Surrender: We’re often so afraid of looking like a fool that we resist surrendering to the process. Instead of resisting, surrender to your Coach and the demands of your discipline. For 90 days, do everything your Coach tells you to do, no questions asked, and see how far you’ll progress.

4. Intentionality: Every master is a master of vision. Visualization is the connection between imagination and purpose. Picture your success before it happens.

5. The Edge: Push the limits of higher performance; this growth will reveal areas where you need to improve. This will help you connect to constant and never-ending improvement.

Mastery takes time, and while you may not achieve it in 2017, you can start on the path. With practice and patience, you’ll be able to achieve mastery. Get inspired to achieve this year!
