When your business puts more demands on your time, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. To cope, it’s natural to focus on working harder; that is, putting in longer hours to keep up. Before you know it, you’re working around the clock and your business begins to take over your personal life as well. Make no mistake about it: managing your time is important, but managing your energy is essential if you want to achieve long-term success. The key is to be intentional about where and how you invest your energy each day.

4 Types of Energy & How to Manage Them

We have four types of energy to tap into each day. Each of these types of energy are connected and impact our overall performance. When we don’t take time to rest and refill our energy, we feel burnt out and unmotivated.

  1. Physical energy is the energy we have for our physical activities and labor. It’s the energy we use when we run, whether we’re running to appointments or logging training miles for our next marathon. We need our physical energy to be high in order to meet the demands of our daily lives.

[box]Optimize it: Go for a walk! It’s that simple. When you make time for exercise, you’ll have the energy to pour into your day. My trainer comes to the house every morning so I can start the day on a productive note. Another tip is to eat healthy meals so you can fuel your body with the good stuff that will feed your energy and boost your success.[/box]

  1. Mental energy allows us to concentrate on the tasks at hand. It helps you remain present so you can complete your work and boost your productivity.

[box]Optimize it: Time-block your day. Studies show the brain can only concentrate on a task for 90 minutes before it starts to tire. Every 90 minutes, take a 10 minute break to read a chapter in a book, listen to your favorite song or write in your journal. This gives your brain an opportunity to rest and recharge. Additionally, take at least one day off a week to spend with family, traveling or pursuing your hobbies, and be sure to let your clients know you’ll be offline that day.[/box]

  1. Emotional energy is the quality of our energy and helps us interact with family, clients and co-workers. When you feel emotionally centered, you can reach optimal performance.

[box]Optimize it: Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Make sure you’re spending time with positive, successful people who inspire you and renew your energy instead of leaving you feel depleted.[/box]

  1. A sense of purpose is the energy that gives you a reason for doing what you do each day and helps you stay motivated to succeed.

[box]Optimize it: Set goals in all areas of your life and post them where you can see them every day. When you have a clear picture of what you want and what you’re striving for, you’ll renew your mental and emotional energy and reconnect with your sense of purpose.[/box]
