If you have a clear goal in mind, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve outstanding success in your life. I recently shared the first in a series of unheard recordings by personal growth legend Earl Nightingale in which he explained why a clearly defined goal is vital to success. Here are some of the major takeaways from that recording:

Set Your Course

If you want to succeed, you must progressively set and achieve goals, one after another, each a little better than the former. Just as a ship sails to only one point at a time, in order to succeed you have to set your first port of call. Then, when you reach it, you can set a new goal, and then another. By following this meaningful and common-sense approach to life, you will accomplish more in five years than most people do in a lifetime.

Establish a Clearly Defined Goal

Can you say in one concise, well-defined sentence what your goal is? If you can’t, take some time alone and write down the things you want to achieve. This could include a beautiful home, a car, money, a specific income or a particular position in your company, for example. Once you have complied as many as you can think of, choose just one that you want more than all the others. Be sure your goal is absolutely specific. Don’t generalize. If your goal is a certain amount of money, for example, write down the exact amount and the time limit for earning.

You Become What You Think About

You can only achieve one goal at a time. Once you’ve decided on the one thing you intend to accomplish, write it on a card and carry it with you. For the next 30 days, look at this card every morning, every night and as much as possible during the day. See yourself as having already attained your goal. By doing this, you will force your goal into your subconscious mind and begin to work towards it. This powerful habit will lead you from one success to another – you really will become what you think about.
