We can’t deny that our society today is unfortunately far less civil than it used to be. Whether it’s when people have to share public spaces, like the road or the grocery store, or in more personal interactions, it seems that common courtesy is no longer common practice.

This isn’t just a phenomenon that the older generation has noticed. A recent study found that Millennials are experiencing this decline and deterioration in civility too, most especially online where relative anonymity allows destructive or negative actions to freely occur without any real consequence.

The great news is that it doesn’t have to be like this! It is possible to live in a more enjoyable and satisfying way and help to positively impact the lives of everyone around you too. All you have to do is commit to the three simple principles of courtesy, respect and hospitality. Here’s how you can take the first steps to a better life today:

First, you must be courteous in your interactions with others. Courtesy is defined as the showing of politeness in one’s attitude and behavior towards other people. Not only can being courteous improve your personal relationships, in business it can make you a fortune by helping you stand out from the competition and create greater customer loyalty. Embrace courtesy, good manners and kindness when dealing with people and everything in your life will improve.

Next, you must practice respect. Being respectful means feeling and showing esteem or honor for someone. Some of the qualities of a respectful person include a focus on serving others, being polite and being a source of encouragement, not negativity. Remember, as you strive to respect others, to always respect yourself too!

Finally, be a good host. Hospitality is a magnificent thing and, contrary to what you might think, it doesn’t mean that you need to spend money. All you need to do to be hospitable is to be genuinely friendly. Be generous of mind and of spirit. Generosity has nothing to do with your current economic state; it’s an attitude of the mind and the heart. Smile and give good energy to people and it will be returned to you in kind. As the old saying goes, don’t wait for people to be friendly – show them how! Lead in friendliness and others will follow.

If you want to live an uncommon life and have uncommon success, commit to these three simple principles of courtesy, respect and hospitality. Make time to take stock of where you are and then reset your attitude, adjust your spirit and get back on track. There’s phenomenal power in the common courtesies that have become uncommon!
