Over the last year people everywhere have been in a funk, often without even realizing it. With quarantines and lockdowns in place, the world shrank and we defaulted to survival mode. However, with restrictions easing and society opening up again, it’s time to go from surviving to thriving. Here are some tips to experience joy and get back on track to achieve your goals once more:  

Get Moving

When you’re in limbo, as so many people have been because of the global pandemic, you feel no sense of joy. To offset the sensation of being stuck, get moving. As John Mason Good once said, “Happiness consists in activity. It is a running stream, not a stagnant pool.” Take the time to write down your short-, medium- and long-term goals. Make plans and dream again. Whether it’s a long-awaited vacation or the opportunity to see family and friends, focus on where you want to go, what you want to do and how you’re going to do it.  

Get Uncomfortable

Post COVID, two addictions emerged on a grand scale: comfort and control. People have become so accustomed to the status quo that they’re reluctant to try anything new. The truth is, however, that discomfort is where you grow. To make progress, you need to find out what you really want, set some uncomfortable goals and go pursue them. As M. Scott Peck once said, “The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy or unfulfilled.  For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.”

Live the Good Life

Many people believe that the good life is a destination. They feel that once they acquire enough material goods or make a certain amount of money, they’ll be happy. This isn’t authentic.  As American psychologist Carl Rogers once said, “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction and not a destination.” When you feel like the good life is out of reach you need to reset, readjust, restart and refocus as many times as you need to. The key is to keep moving and never give up!
