It can be difficult to stay upbeat and motivated when faced with life’s many challenges. We all encounter ‘joy stealers’ that deplete us of our resources of energy and enthusiasm. Too often, we can feel like we’re stuck in a rut, doing the same thing over and over but making no discernible progress. This is usually because we lose perspective and focus on what we don’t have, instead of what we do. So how can we get – and stay – fired up when the going gets tough? We have to think of ourselves as locomotives.  To keep moving forward, we must shovel coal into our furnace, fire up the engine and work to tackle the twists and turns on the track of life!  Here are some tips and strategies to do just that:

Create Some Momentum

Sometimes, it can feel like everything is going wrong. But if you get even a small amount of momentum, you can suddenly feel like things are going your way again. To create real momentum, set goals for the next ten days, ten months and ten years. After all, a decade is made up of a whole bunch of ten day goals!

Increase Your Exposure to Others

Many people in this world have been through extraordinarily hard times and have survived and thrived in spite of their troubles. When you get exposed to people with extraordinary spirit, attitude and energy, you get perspective. Your big problems become little problems. Also, take the time to reflect on situations when you overcame hardship. Tell yourself, ‘If they can do it, I can do it’ and ‘I did it before, I can do it again.’ These powerful affirmations will help when you’re struggling.

Be Thankful

You can’t have gratitude and entitlement in your heart and mind at the same time! Be grateful for what you have and where you are. Focus on all the blessings in your day. Gratitude is transformative and it changes everything. As Cicero said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues, but the parent of all others.”

Celebrate Your Wins

If you don’t take the time to mark what you’ve achieved, you risk burnout. Track, measure and then celebrate your wins to clearly see your progress.

Renew

It’s vital to renew physically, mentally and emotionally. But remember – renewing your mind is not refreshing your screen! Get your head out of the digital world and into real life by exercising, taking a vacation and spending time with family and friends.
